Minister of Youth and Sports Namal Rajapaksa has requested Bhanuka Rajapaksa to reconsider his decision to retire from Sri Lanka Cricket.
Minister Rajapaksa said as a young player who has potential to continue to play cricket for the country, it is important to face one’s challenges rather than to reach hasty decisions.
The Minister said players have the right to leave the sport due to personal reasons, adding however that he is able to intervene if the decision to resign was reached as a result of an issue with the administration or if he was faced with any injustice.
Minister Namal Rajapaksa noted he is unable change the entire structure or the legal system based on one or several players, adding that the whole process will collapse if it is changed in such a manner.
The Sports Minister therefore requested Bhanuka Rajapaksa to reconsider his decision to resign from Sri Lanka Cricket.
Bhanuka Rajapaksa tendered his resignation from Sri Lanka Cricket, citing family obligations.
In his letter of resignation he said, “I have very carefully considered my position as a player, husband and am taking this decision looking forward to fatherhood and associated familial obligations.”
Rajapaksa represented Sri Lanka in five One Day Internationals and 18 Twenty20 Internationals.
He has scored 409 runs for Sri Lanka after making his debut in October 2019.
Bhanuka Rajapaksa was also part of the recently concluded Lanka Premier League tournament
