10 more Sri Lankan players including Angelo Mathews, Dinesh Chandimal and Kusal Janith Perera are expected to feature in this year’s Lanka Premier League tournament after not being picked by any LPL team during the Player Draft.
The ‘Player Draft’ of the Second Edition of the LPL was held on Tuesday.
A total of 600 players, consisting of 300 overseas and 300 Sri Lankan players featured in the draft, which was held virtually with the participation of the five franchise owners and Sri Lanka Cricket officials.
The draft consisting of 20 rounds, covering several player categories, such as Local and Overseas Icon Player, Local and Overseas Diamond Player, Local and Overseas Gold Player, and Local and Overseas Classic Player saw several season Lankans players not being picked.
Accordingly, SLC decided to increase the LPL team squads from 20 to 22 to accommodate 10 senior Lankan players.
SLC said franchise owners will be granted an opportunity to pick two players each ahead of the LPL tournament.
SLC said LPL owners based on a yet to be announced criteria will be able to pick two players each from the pool consisting of Angelo Mathews, Dinesh Chandimal, Kusal Janith Perera, Dhananjaya de Silva, Akila Dananjaya, Praveen Jayawickrama, Minod Bhanuka, Sadeera Samarawickrama, Ashan Priyanjan and Shiran Fernando.
