The Samagi Jana Balawegaya says spiked barricades used by the Fort Police to block the entrance to the Galle Face Green were used with the intention of endangering the lives of protesters.

The SJB said the government and the Police are responsible for any injuries sustained by protesters.

Speaking during a media briefing this morning, Parliamentarian Mujibur Rahuman said Police had obtained several court orders in order to barricade roads.

He questioned the actions of the Police in attempting to disrupt public protests adding such actions are illegal.

MP Rahuman said the Bar Association of Sri Lanka has also raised concerns over the barricades.

The Parliamentarian said the government’s deliberate actions must be addressed.

He however added the Inter-University Students Federation protest march was not hindered as university students diverted protests towards the Prime Minister’s residence.

Commenting on Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa’s claim of being physically fit, the MP said they are unable to challenge the claim as they have witnessed how the 76-year-old Premier is assisted by two personnel when arriving in Parliament.

MP Rahuman said they are baffled as to why the Prime Minister made such claims to agitate the youth.

Meanwhile, SJB MP Harshana Rajakaruna said the present administration must resign immediately in order to save the country from anarchy.

Speaking during a media briefing in Colombo, MP Rajakaruna said the government misled 6.9 million individuals and proceeded to acquit themselves from ongoing legal proceedings.

The Parliamentarian said the administration continues to hold on to power in an attempt to acquit themselves from the remaining court cases including the case pertaining to the alleged misappropriation of state funds to purchase a plot of land and build a luxurious home in Malwana.

MP Rajakaruna said irrespective of being acquitted from legal proceedings, a SJB-led government will bring all wrong-doers to justice in an independent manner.
