COLOMBO (NewsRadio); The transportation of vegetables to Colombo from upcountry areas by train commenced yesterday after a lapse of 23 years.
The proposal in this regard was presented by President Ranil Wickremesinghe through the 2022 interim budget.
Accordingly, Sri Lanka Railways prepared five special compartments to transport vegetables, fruits and flowers.
Accordingly, as a pilot project, the first train with vegetables left for Colombo from the Nanu Oya station at 5pm yesterday.
The special train will transport vegetables to the Colombo Manning Market and super markets.
Vegetables, flowers and fruits produced in Nuwara Eliya, Badulla, Bandarawela and Welimada will be transported to Colombo.
This will reduce the fuel expenditure of both producers and those purchasing produce from upcountry.
Sri Lanka Railways said the special train will operate continuously from next month.
