Minister of Public Security and Chief Government Whip Prasanna Ranatunga says a special team led by the Senior Superintendent of Police of Avissawella has been appointed to investigate yesterday’s unrest in Rambukkana.

Speaking in Parliament today, Minister Ranatunga said a special committee chaired by a Secretary of the Ministry of Public Administration has been appointed to probe the actions of Police during yesterday’s unrest.

The Minister said steps will be taken to table the committee report in Parliament promptly.

He said Police took all possible steps to control the protest adding the shooting took place after exhausting all alternatives.

Minister Ranatunga claimed that all individuals who led and supported protests must take responsibility for the prevailing situation.

The Chief Government Whip said various posts pertaining to protests were circulated on social media adding Police have identified these individuals.

He said however they will not endanger the lives of citizens.

The Minister said the JVP gathered crowds in buses to engage in a protest march claiming Samagi Jana Balawegaya-affiliated individuals also led protests in various areas.
