COLOMBO (NewsRadio); Special dengue prevention programs will be carried out within the Colombo Municipal Council limits in the next two weeks.
Chief Medical Officer for the Colombo Municipal Council Dr. Ruwan Wijemuni said dengue prevention programs will be carried out from today to the 26th of May.
Dr. Ruwan Wijemuni said during the program, legal action will be taken against persons who maintain dengue breeding grounds.
Meanwhile, the National Dengue Control Unit said the number of dengue cases has risen to an epidemic level.
According to latest numbers issued by the National Dengue Control Unit, over 2,000 dengue cases are reported on a weekly basis.
Speaking during a media briefing in Colombo, Consultant Community Physician Dr. Nimalka Pannilahetti of the National Dengue Control Unit noted that 50 percent of the reported dengue cases at present have been infected with Dengue type II virus.
Dr. Pannilahetti said that the highest number of infected people is reported from the Colombo, Gampaha, Kalutara, Kandy, Kurunegala, Puttalam, Galle, Batticaloa and Trincomalee districts.
51.7 percent of the dengue cases reported is from the Western Province.
Around 32,600 dengue cases have been reported thus far this year.
