Chief Government Whip Minister Prasanna Ranatunga says the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna will maintain a majority in efforts to form an all-party government.
Speaking in Parliament today, Minister Ranatunga said the public is calling for Parliament to unite and rebuild the country adding the SLPP being sensitive to public calls reached a decision to support the all-party government.
He said certain factions claim that the government has lost the mandate of 6.9 million adding the party acknowledges this development.
The Chief Government Whip said certain groups who were influenced by international or local conspiracies engaged in a struggle to oust the Head of State who held a majority mandate.
He said the church laid baseless accusations over the 2019 Easter Sunday attacks on former President Gotabaya Rajapaksa.
Minister Ranatunga said the Head of State who was called ‘Hitler’ and was accused of using white-vans to kidnap individuals adhered to the public’s call and stepped down.
He said the SLPP garnered 145 seats through 6.7 million votes at the General Election held on the 05th August 2020, while the Samagi Jana Balawegaya claimed 54 seats, the Tamil National Alliance 10 seats, and the JVP three seats.
Meanwhile, the Speaker of the House Mahinda Yapa Abeywardana today announced in Parliament that the role of Chairperson of Parliamentary committees including the Parliamentary Business Committee, the Committee on Public Accounts and the Committee on Public Finance will be granted to a member of the opposition.
