The Sri Lanka Freedom Party commemorates its 71st anniversary today.
The SLFP was founded by former Prime Minister SWRD Bandaranaike on the 2nd of September 1951 after defecting from the then ruling United National Party.
The 71st anniversary celebrations of the SLFP will take place at the Maharagama National Youth Council premises at 1.30pm today.
The event will be held under the patronage of party chairman former President Maithripala Sirisena.
In line with the 71st anniversary celebrations, the National Assembly will also be called to amend the SLFP constitution.
The proposals approved by the Central Committee of the SLFP yesterday will be presented to the National Assembly.
Accordingly, the number of members in the SLFP Executive Council will be increased to 35 from 25.
Furthermore, the number of Senior Vice Presidents in the party will be increased to seven from four.
Another proposal to be ratified today will be the move to increase the number of Vice Presidents in the SLFP to 14 from 10.
The SLFP said during today’s convention, a proposal to vest powers with the Party Chairman to remove Vice Presidents, Vice Presidents, the National Organizer and the Treasurer will also be ratified.
