The Sri Lanka Freedom Party has decided to rebuild the United People’s Freedom Alliance and the People’s United Front and embark on a new political journey.

Senior Vice President of the SLFP Prof. Rohana Luxman Piyadasa said the decision was reached at the SLFP Central Committee meeting held recently under the patronage of party leader Former President Maithripala Sirisena.

He noted there were several alliances in the past led by the SLFP adding that steps will be taken to reactivate the two alliances together with leftist and progressive parties that don’t represent Parliament.

Piyadasa said related activities will be initiated in future in order to reestablish a broad leftist, progressive and nationalistic movement.

He added Minister Mahinda Amaraweera will serve as the Secretary of the UPFA while State Minister Lasantha Alagiyawanna will serve as the Secretary of the People’s United Front.

Meanwhile Rohana Luxman also expressed his views over the possible damage to the Parakrama Samudraya in Polonnaruwa due to new constructions.

He said the government must identify the most important development initiatives at a time when a global pandemic is raging.

Piyadasa said the government must identify development initiatives that are important at present and act accordingly, especially at a time when schools and universities have remained closed for nearly two years and the manufacturing industry has been hampered.

He stated economic and social difficulties of the public are on the rise. He also claimed that historical places of importance, such as the Parakrama Samudraya must not be tarnished citing it is a national treasure.

Piyadasa said steps should instead be taken to renovate the Parakrama Samudraya instead of introducing new additions.
