The National Movement for Social Justice says in addition to the economic and political crisis that Sri Lanka is currently facing, the country is amidst a grave environmental crisis that requires suitable solutions.
The Movement called on the government to promptly take action in this regard.
Issuing a statement the National Movement said, it directed the attention of the government to certain issues and initial steps that can be taken.
The statement added when Gotabaya Rajapaksa was elected President in 2019, the forest density in the country was at 29% which has to date dropped to 16% due to the arbitrary actions of the government.
The Movement also stated that at least one wild elephant dies daily in the country and during 2022 around 395 wild elephants are believed to have died while the number of individuals who have died owing to the human elephant conflict is at a larger scale.
The National Movement for Social Justice also rued the air pollution that has been reported in the country through harmful gases and gases that enter the country through surrounding land areas.
They also noted that the threat to agriculture could lead to a food crisis which will result in the most harmful impact on the country.
The Movement said the government has been informed of all possible risks the country is faced with and urged the President to take prompt action in this regard.
