Former Minister of Health Parliamentarian Rajitha Senaratne says the country is now at great risk due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Speaking during a media briefing MP Senaratne said Intensive Care Units and hospital beds of all government hospitals, including the Colombo National Hospital, are at full capacity with COVID-patients.
The Parliamentarian accused the government of relaxing all restrictions and attempting to create misconceptions.
MP Senaratne said as of Tuesday, 290 COVID patients were being treated at the Colombo National Hospital adding the number increased to 345 yesterday.
The Parliamentarian said a grave situation is arising as warned by the Sri Lanka Medical Association.
The Parliamentarian said if the Ministry of Health was granted complete powers, the country would not have been at serious risk due to the pandemic.
He said reinforcing the medical sector is futile if decisions are reached on a political level as it renders the health sector and the medical sector ineffective.
MP Senaratne said all decisions pertaining to pandemics thus far was reached by the Ministry of Health adding decisions reached at a higher level resulted in the prevailing situation.
He said over 45 deaths are recorded daily since the 18th of July adding the number of patients has also increased.
