Parliament today directed attention towards favourable solutions not being provided to teacher and principal salary anomalies.
Parliamentarian Rohini Kumari Wijerathna said the Secretary to the Ministry of Education issued a circular summoning all teachers to school adding that teachers are currently engaged in a strike action over salary anomalies, while all schools are closed.
MP Wijerathna therefore questioned the Education Minister on whether teachers were summoned to schools as the government is afraid of the trade union action and is seeking to sabotage the strike.
In response, Minister of Education Professor GL Peiris said the government is not afraid of strike actions adding that the Cabinet of Ministers discussed the matter at length last evening.
The Education Minister said the government accepts that concessions must be provided to teachers adding however a solution cannot be provided instantly.
Minister Peiris said after considering all factors, the government will table practical solutions for the state sector when the Budget is presented in November.
MP Wijerathna claimed the Education Minister misunderstood the question adding that teachers want to know if salary anomalies will be addressed and if the teacher service will be named an open service.
In response the Education Minister reiterated measures will be taken in this regard when the Budget is presented.
