(NewsRadio); The Sri Lanka Army says the situation at the Kandakadu Treatment and Rehabilitation Centre in Polonnaruwa is now under control.
A heated situation reported last evening following clashes between two groups within the centre.
A large number of inmates escaped the centre following the incident while some others sustained injuries.
Director Media and Army Spokesman Brigadier Ravi Herath confirmed 514 inmates are under Army and Police accountability, while 218 of those who were not involved in clashes have been transferred to Senapura Rehabilitation Centre.
Another 211 inmates have been handed over to Police for further inquiry.
The Army Spokesman said 33 others are unaccounted for. Nearly 50 inmates escaped from the Kandakadu Treatment and Rehabilitation Centre in Polonnaruwa following a clash between two groups last evening.
A team of officers was deployed to apprehend those escaped from the centre last evening.
Subsequently, several persons reported missing turned themselves in.
Meanwhile, President Ranil Wickremesinghe called for a full report on yesterday’s Kandakadu Rehabilitation Centre incident and steps needed to be taken to avert a recurrence of such incidents, following discussions with Justice Minister Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe.
