The JVP says temporarily suspending operations of the Sapugaskanda Oil Refinery will lead to many issues in the future.

Politburo member of the JVP Former Parliamentarian Sunil Handunnetti speaking at an event in Gampaha said importing crude oil is cheaper opposed to importing refined fuel.

He said theft, corruption, wastage, and fraud that exists from head to toe in government officials will not help in solving the country’s issues adding it is a major concern.

Handunnetti added if the country’s issues are to be addressed certain sacrifices must be made.

He questioned why refined oil was not imported previously if it is a better alternative to crude oil imports claiming that the Sapugaskanda Refinery too would not be required.

He questioned if officials don’t understand the importance and difference between refined oil and crude oil.

The former MP said crude oil is used for tar, furnace oil, and airplane fuel adding that the tar required for the Rs.85 billion road construction project would also have to be imported.

Handunnetti said had officials revealed the truth to the people, they would be more patient.
