The Department of Meteorology says the low pressure area in the south-east Bay of Bengal has intensified into a depression and is located about 250km north of Point Pedro.
It is expected to move northwestwards and reach the northern Tamil Nadu coast this evening.
The Department said showery weather over the island is expected to reduce from today.
The Met Department predicted showers in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, North-western and Central provinces and in the Galle and Matara districts, with a few showers in the North-central province.
The Department also predicted showers or thundershowers in the Uva province and in the Ampara and Batticaloa districts in the evening or night, with fairly heavy showers above 50mm in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central and North-western provinces.
