Leader of the Opposition Sajith Premadasa says there is a shortage of around 40 essential drugs across the country.
Issuing a statement, the Opposition Leader said essential medicines used against the coronavirus and pneumonia were among them.
MP Premadasa said despite raising this concern on several occasions, it was met with insults and utter disregard by the government.
The statement said the government disregarded both accountability and responsibility and as a result Sri Lanka has been ranked first in the world in coronavirus deaths ratio.
The Opposition Leader said he repeatedly emphasized that the government must take action to mitigate the COVID-19 pandemic instead of holding elections, to no avail.
The statement added the Samagi Jana Balawegaya requested the government to convene an all-party leader meeting to seek a solution to the coronavirus pandemic for over a year.
MP Premadasa said the government did not pay any attention to the pandemic until it escalated.
The Opposition Leader urged the government to impose a lockdown over a few days considering the seriousness of COVID-19 in the country.
