Investigations into a Police Constable firing at the vehicle of former Director of the Criminal Investigation Department, Rt. Senior Superintendent of Police Shani Abeysekera, has been handed over to the CID.

The incident was reported on the 17th of December.

SSP Abeysekera’s vehicle was shot at while it was parked at his residence.

However, SSP Abeysekera was not at home at the time of the incident and the Police Constable failed to report the incident.

Upon leaving to refuel his vehicle, he identified a fuel leak and after being sent for repairs was informed that the leak was a result of a hole caused by a gunshot.

Subsequent investigations revealed that the Police Constable had fired at the vehicle.

Accordingly, the former CID Director informed the Borella Police OIC of the incident.

Based on the complaint, statements were recorded from the Constable assigned to SSP Abeysekera’s security detail and further investigations into the incident have been handed over to the CID.

Due to various threats levelled at SSP Shani Abeysekera armed Policemen have been provided for his protection.
