The Samagi Jana Balawegaya has questioned the government over what legal action is being taken against State Minister Lohan Ratwatte for entering the Anuradhapura Prison complex and threatening several inmates.
Speaking at a media briefing today, Parliamentarian Field Marshal Sarath Fonseka said if the government fails to take action against the State Minister, the SJB under a government led by them will take legal action against Lohan Ratwatte.
MP Fonseka likened the actions of State Minister Ratwatte to that of a coward.
The MP said he is well aware of the plight of prisoners as he too was once imprisoned and requested inmates to take action against such persons in future.
The Field Marshal requested the public to stand with inmates and not to forgive those who acted in such an unruly manner.
MP Fonseka said the government is attempting to mislead the public and claimed Lohan Ratwatte still holds the portfolio of State Minister of Gem & Jewellery Related Industries.
MP Fonseka also commented on the statements made by the Prisons Commissioner General and the Inspector General of Police pertaining to the incident.
He said the Commissioner General’s statement that such an incident was not reported is shameless, adding he is responsible for ensuring the human rights of the prisoners.
He stated the Commissioner’s statement reveals there are flaws in the system.
MP Fonseka said this incident occurred at a time that the United Nations Human Rights Commission has brought forward numerous allegations against the country, adding this was similar to providing ammunition to a foe to use against the country.
MP Fonseka also claimed the IGP must be proactive and must not wait for a report or a complaint to be filed in order to take action.
