The Railway Control Room informed that train delays were reported today (27) due to a train ramming into a building and derailing at the Dematagoda Railway Yard.

A spokesperson said the train has been re-railed.

The Ruhunu Kumari rammed in to a building after being unable to control the speed and derailed at the Dematagoda Jalashakti Station.

The Railway Department was compelled to cancel several trains following a prompt union action by train drivers and assistants.

The Ruhunu Kumari that was plying from Beliatta to Maradana was being driven by an assistant from Maradana to the Dematagoda Railway Yard.

A train driver’s quarters was also damaged in the incident.

The assistant has been suspended by the Railway Management over the accident.

The union action was initiated by the locomotive driver assistants and was called off after two hours, leading to five trains being cancelled.

The train was heading to the Yard for maintenance purposes when the train rammed into the building after being unable to bring the train to a halt.

Police said investigation revealed that the engine driver had fallen asleep.

Sri Lanka Railways has launched an internal investigation into the incident.

No casualties have been reported.
