The 76th Convention of the United National Party’s (UNP) was held at the Sugathadasa Stadium in Colombo this afternoon.
The UNP Convention was held under the theme “‘Lets Build Together.’
The ceremony was held under the patronage of party leader President Ranil Wickremesinghe.
The Sugathadasa Stadium was packed to capacity with people representing every corner of the country.
The anniversary ceremony commenced with all the pomp and pageantry and party Leader and President Ranil Wickremesinghe placing a garland on the statue of the party’s Founder D.S. Senanayake and other former leaders.
Floral tributes were placed at the statue of Dudly Senanayake by the Party Deputy Leader Ruwan Wijewardena.
Floral tributes were placed at the statue of Sir John Kothalawala by the Deputy Leader of the Party, Akila Viraj Kariyawasam, floral tributes were laid at the statue of J.R. Jayawardena by the United National Party General Secretary Palitha Range Bandara, floral tributes were placed at the statue of R. Premadasa by MP Wajira Abeywardena, and floral tributes were placed at the statue of D.B. Wijetunga by Senior Advisor to the President, Sagala Ratnayake.
It was also noteworthy that the entire stadium rose to their feet in a show of respect while floral tributes were placed at the monuments of the party’s former leaders.
Demonstrating the value of national unity, the national anthem was sung in both Sinhala and Tamil languages and a series of videos showcasing the pride of the party was shown. Musical performances showcasing local culture added colour to the anniversary celebrations.
UNP Deputy Leader Ruwan Wijewardene, Chairman Wajira Abeywardena, Assistant Leader Akila Viraj Kariyawasam, National Organizer Sagala Ratnayaka, General Secretary Palitha Range Bandara, former Ministers John Amaratunga, DM Swaminathan, Ravi Karunanayake, Naveen Dissanayake, Daya Gamage, Anoma Gamage, and several other UNP working committee members attended the convention today.
A large number of political party leaders also graced the UNP convention today.
Prime Minister Dinesh Gunawardena, EPDP Leader Douglas Devananda, Leader of the United People’s Party Tiran Alles, Leader of the Sri Lanka Muslim Congress Rauff Hakeem, Leader of the All Ceylon Makkal Congress Rishad Bathiudeen, Leader of the National Congress ALM Athaullah and the General Secretary of the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna Sagara Kariyawasam participated as UNP commemorate its 76th Convention.
Ministers Harin Fernando and Manusha Nanayakkara were also among the invitees at the UNP Convention today.
The United National Party commemorated its 76th Anniversary today.
The UNP was founded on the 6th of September 1946 by Don Stephen Senanayake, who later became the first Prime Minister of Sri Lanka.
The UNP also referred to as the Grand Old Party had been the governing party from 1947 to 1956, from 1965 to 1970, from 1977 to 1994, 2001 to 2004, and 2015 to 2019.
The UNP is celebrating its 76th Anniversary while leader of the party President Ranil Wickremesinghe is taking forward a major reform agenda to save the country from the current economic crisis.
The UNP is also touted as the party which has introduced the most number of progressive reforms and programmes to take the country forward.
