Police have arrested another group of individuals pertaining to the recent protest launched by the Inter University Students’ Federation adjacent to the Parliament complex.
Police said the group arrested yesterday includes the Convenor of the Inter University Students’ Federation and the President of the Students’ Union of the Sri Jayewardenepura University.
The group is due to be produced before Kaduwela Magistrate’s Court today.
Police Media Spokesman Senior DIG Ajith Rohana said the Officer in Charge of the Maharagama Police sustained serious injuries and broke two fingers during the protest held on the 3rd of August.
He noted damages were also caused as a result of a coffin being set on fire on the road.
The Senior DIG said another group was previously arrested in connection to the incident.
Senior DIG Ajith Rohana stated three van drivers that brought individuals from various areas for the protest were also arrested, for violating travel restrictions.
He added the groups had arrived from Medirigiriya, Peradeniya and Tissamaharama.
Meanwhile Police have arrested several individuals pertaining to a protest held adjacent to the Soysa Roundabout in Colombo yesterday.
Senior DIG Ajith Rohana said three persons were arrested for violating quarantine regulations.
He noted they will be produced before the Hulftsdorp Magistrate’s Court today.
Further investigations are being conducted by the Cinnamon Gardens Police, to identify person who arrived at the protest in violation of provincial travel restrictions.
