Seven Urban Councils will be elevated to the status of Municipal Council following recommendations by the Ministry of Public Administration, Home Affairs, Provincial Councils and Local Government.
Accordingly, Kalutara, Kegalle, Puttalam, Vavuniya, Mannar, Trincomalee and Ampara Urban Councils will be elevated to the Municipal Council status.
Meanwhile, recommendations have also been made to elevate the Kilinochchi, Mullaitivu and Monaragala Pradeshiya Sabhas to Urban Council status.
A Cabinet paper in this regard has been presented yesterday by the Prime Minister in his capacity as the Minister of Public Administration, Home Affairs, Provincial Councils and Local Government.
At present, Sri Lanka has 341 local government bodies including 24 Municipal Council, 41 Urban Councils and 276 Pradeshiya Sabhas.
