The second phase of the Bandaranaike International Airport expansion project is scheduled to be inaugurated this morning under the patronage of Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa.
The annual passenger handling capacity of the BIA, which is six million at present, is expected to increase to 15 million passengers upon completion of the project.
The cost of the B-package project, a joint venture between Japan and Sri Lanka, is Rs.6.1 billion.
The total cost of the project exceeds Rs.100 billion.
Following completion of the project, the number of checkpoints at the BIA will increase from 53 to 149, the number of emigration terminals from 21 to 53 and the number of immigration terminals from 27 to 83.
