Minister of Education GL Peiris says there is no possibility to reopen schools in the first week of September, as planned previously.
Speaking during a media briefing in Colombo today, Minister Peiris said the government had a clear plan to reopen schools to coincide with the vaccination programme.
The Education Minister said they were hoping to administer both doses of the vaccine to all teachers and non-academic staff at schools before the end of August and reopen schools in September.
Minister Peiris said however due to the prevailing coronavirus situation, it is not possible to reopen schools as planned.
The Education Minister noted that therefore they have to depend on online education method to cover the syllabus.
He said however due to the on-going trade union action, they cannot continue online education activities.
Minister GL Peiris said the withdrawal of teachers from online education activities should be considered an act of revenge.
He said it is unacceptable that teachers are continuing with their trade union action at a time the government and the country is dealing with a health emergency.
