COLOMBO (NewsRadio); The Supreme Court today upheld the guilty verdicts issued on former President Maithripala Sirisena’s Chief of Staff K Mahanama and former Chairman of the State Timber Corporation P Dissanayake by the Colombo High Court Trial-at-Bar in 2019.
Accordingly, the Supreme Court reaffirmed the sentences issued by court on the duo who were found guilty of soliciting a Rs.20 million bribe from an Indian businessman.
Following lengthy investigations and court proceedings, in December 2019, the Trial-at-Bar imposed a 20-year rigorous prison sentence and a Rs.65,000 fine on former President Maithripala Sirisena’s Chief of Staff K Mahanama and a 12-year rigorous prison sentence and a fine of Rs. 55,000 on former Chairman of the State Timber Corporation P Dissanayake.
The duo was arrested on the 3rd of May 2018 while accepting a bribe of Rs.20 million from an Indian national to award a contract related to the Sugar factory in Kantale.
