The Sandahiru Seya was vested with the Venerable Maha Sanga today by President Gotabaya Rajapaksa and Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa.
A number of distinguished invitees were present at the ‘Crest Gem’ unveiling ceremony.
Secretary to the Ministry of Defence Rt. General Kamal Gunaratne said the Sandahiru Seya, which is 283 feet tall, is the second tallest Chaitya in the country, next to the Ruwan Weli Seya.
The project was initiated in 2010 and was completed this month.
Construction was undertaken by the Tri-Forces. Widows of war heroes and disabled war veterans also attended today’s event.
Construction of the Sandahiru Seya was initiated during Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa’s term as President, when current President Gotabaya Rajapaksa was the Secretary of Defence, in honour of the soldiers who sacrificed their lives during the conflict.
