The United National Party has urged the government to address the concerns surrounding salaries of teachers and principals before re-opening schools.
Issuing a statement, Deputy Leader of the UNP Ruwan Wijewardena noted that discussions must be held with union representatives, instead of attempting to silence their voices.
Former State Minister Wijewardena said the previous UNP-led administration took meaningful steps to resolve a number of issues of teachers and increase their monthly salaries by Rs. 10,000.
He said however at present, education, health and economy have collapsed due to failed policies of the present administration.
The UNP Deputy Leader added since the government has announced that it intends to reopen schools this month, discussions must be held with trade unionists to end their struggle.
Former State Minister Wijewardena noted that the matter should be resolved promptly since it impacts the future of the children.
