COLOMBO (NewsRadio); General Secretary of the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna Sagara Kariyawasam has been nominated to the Constitutional Council.
Prime Minister Dinesh Gunawardena said Parliamentarian Sagara Kariyawasam has been nominated to represent the party which holds majority in Parliament.
The 10-member Constitutional Council was established following the enactment of the 21st Amendment to the Constitution.
The Constitutional Council is the responsible body to appoint members to the independent commissions such as Police commission, Bribery commission and Election commission.
The Speaker holds the chairmanship of the Council while the Prime Minister and Opposition Leader are ex-officio members of the 10-member Constitutional Council.
President Ranil Wickremesinghe has named Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva to the Constitutional Council as his nominee.
One member of the Constitutional Council has to be nominated by a majority of Government MPs, while the Opposition Leader’s party nominates another.
Minority parties and opposition groups that do not belong to the Opposition Leader’s party can also nominate one MP to the Constitutional Council.
The other three Constitutional Council members will be appointed from outside Parliament.
