‘Safety of children should be strengthened at rural level’

President Gotabaya Rajapaksa says the safety of children should be strengthened at rural level.

According to information revealed pertaining to child slavery, a high percentage were identified as estate workers children.

The President said necessary powers should be exercised at Grama Niladhari Division to prevent such occurrences.

President Rajapaksa said the Grama Niladhari have information of estate families adding that action should be taken promptly to bring an end to child slavery based on the information uncovered.

The President expressed his views during a discussion with the National Child Protection Authority and related organisations at the Presidential Secretariat this morning.

Attention was also directed to the responsibility of the NCPA to ensure all children receive compulsory pre-school, school and Dhamma school education, and to determine reasons behind children who do not attend school.
