COLOMBO (NewsRadio); Nationals of Russia, India and the United Kingdom have accounted for 49 percent of the tourist arrivals in the month of December.

A total of 77,368 tourists have already arrived in Sri Lanka until the 27th of December.

The Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority said more than 1,000 visitors have arrived from Russia, India, the UK, Australia, Germany, the United States, the Maldives, France, Canada and Israel in the first seven days of the month.

According to data issued by the SLTDA, Sri Lanka has welcomed 705,385 tourists this year.

A majority of the tourists have arrived from India, the UK, Russia, Germany, France, Australia, Canada and the United States.

Meanwhile, the highest number of tourist arrivals was recorded in March this year.

106,500 tourists arrived in March and then the numbers gradually reduced due to various reasons including the economic crisis, protests and being the off season for traditional travelers.

The number of tourists has picked up in the last few months and with the winter season in Europe.

Sri Lanka welcomed more than 89,000 tourists in December 2021.

The Tourism Ministry also took a number of steps to attract visitors especially travelers from Europe in the wintry months.

The tourism sector is gradually picking up following three difficult years due to the 2019 Easter Sunday attacks, the COVID-19 pandemic and also the economic crisis.
