Parliamentarian Lakshman Kiriella urges the government to work with international partners to resolve the country’s economic crisis.
Speaking in Parliament today, MP Kiriella requested the government to discuss with the international community and reschedule the deadlines to repay loans.
He said the previous United National Party-led government worked closely with international partners.
The Parliamentarian said the Generalised System of Preferences Plus (GSP+) concession was granted within the first six months after the UNP-led government came into power.
He said the international community is aware that the then government respected democracy, did not oppress the minorities and protected human rights.
The Chief Opposition Whip said foreign aid will not be granted to governments engaged in the destroying democracy, suppression of minorities and challenging the independence of the judiciary.
He said the present government has no rupees let alone dollars adding they pin the blame for all issues on the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Parliamentarian said there are no queues observed in India, Pakistan and Bangladesh adding the foreign income and reserves of those countries have risen during the pandemic.
