Residents of Panamure are currently engaged in a protest opposite the Panamure Police Station over the death of a youth while in custody of the Panamure Police.
A 38-year-old father of three who was arrested over a complaint lodged over a family dispute died by suicide in the cell.
Police said the individuals had passed away upon admission to hospital.
Meanwhile, two Policemen attached to the Panamure Police Station were suspended in connection to the incident.
Police said three Police teams have been deployed for further investigations.
The matter was taken up for debate in Parliament today.
Speaking in Parliament, Samagi Jana Balawegaya Parliamentarian Hesha Vithanage said a youth who attended yesterday’s protest was beaten to death after being arrested by Police.
Responding to the statement, Minister of Public Security Sarath Weerasekera claimed the reports that the deceased had attended the SJB protest were false.
Minister Weerasekera said the suspect was arrested around 10.30pm adding it had no relation to the protest.
The Minister said all allegations against the Police are false.
