Minister of Education Dinesh Gunawardena has requested Chinese Ambassador to Sri Lanka Qi Zhenhong to promptly grant permission for the Sri Lankan students who returned to the country from China due to the COVID-19 pandemic, to return to China.
Speaking during a discussion with the Chinese Ambassador at the Education Ministry, Minister Gunawardena said although the students are studying online, they must return to China once again as streams such as medicine require practice.
He noted over 230,000 teachers in the country were vaccinated promptly due to the support extended from China.
Attention was also drawn to creating exchange programmes between Chinese and Sri Lankan universities, while the possibility to obtain assistance from China to develop IT facilities in rural schools in Sri Lanka was also discussed.
President Gotabhaya Rajapaksa also requested the Chinese government to establish an Agricultural Technology University in Hambantota, and the Education Minister requested that more attention be paid to the matter.
The Media Unit of the Ministry of Education reported that the Chinese Ambassador stated that the exploration of the port and industrial park has paved the way for a brighter future for Sri Lanka.
