The committee appointed by the Minister of Justice to look into the damages and destruction caused by the fire onboard the MV X-Press Pearl ship has handed over its report to Minister Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe today (10).
The committee comprises of 40 individuals with vast knowledge both locally and internationally in the field.
Prof. Ajith de Alwis and Prof. Prishanthi Gunawardena co-chair the committee.
The committee report states that if steps are not taken to move the debris of the ship a risk persists of the waste onboard the ship mixing with the ocean posing a threat to marine life and corals.
The Minister meanwhile stated that obtaining compensation for the damages will be carried out according to international laws and further action will be taken on the advice of the Attorney General.
