The Ministry of Environment has advised the Central Environmental Authority to conduct an investigation and compile a report pertaining to illegal dwellings and unauthorised constructions along the banks of the Mahaweli River.
The report has been called after a number of complaints pertaining to illegal constructions near the Gannoruwa suspension bridge and about sand mining activities.
Due to illegal activities along the Mahaweli River bank, experts believe certain areas could experience flooding during heavy downpours.
Furthermore, it has been revealed that a majority of the buildings have been constructed without environmental impact assessments.
The Environment Ministry has also decided to hold discussions with officials of the CEA and Geological Survey and Mines Bureau in Kandy in the next two weeks pertaining to the matter.
