The Public Health Inspector’s Union of Sri Lanka has requested religious leaders to refrain from organising events and gathering people, amidst the prevailing COVID-19 situation.
Chairman of the PHI Union Upul Rohana said nearly 100 COVID-19 related deaths are reported daily, adding that the number of cases and deaths will increase in the coming days.
He noted the public must act responsibly, and claimed most infections are reported through non-essential public gatherings including religious functions, weddings and funerals, which can be avoided.
He added the situation is regretful.
He stressed the country is facing the most critical and decisive point since the pandemic broke out.
He noted therefore religious leaders, political leaders and other officials must be committed to save lives.
