Parliament today exchanged views pertaining to the electricity tariff hike.
Leader of the Opposition Sajith Premadasa called on the government to pay attention to providing relief to the public as electricity tariffs have increased by 75%.
Speaking during the adjournment debate on the government’s policy statement in Parliament, MP Premadasa said a solution to the public suffering must be provided as the country is in dire straits.
He said low-income earners have been affected by the increase in electricity tariffs while the industrial and tourism sectors have also been affected.
The Opposition Leader urged the government to re-evaluate the increase in tariffs and provide relief to the public.
Furthermore, Chief Opposition Whip Parliamentarian Lakshman Kiriella called on the Leader of the House to consider providing concessions to low-income earners as previously discussed.
Responding, Minister Susil Premajayantha said a debate pertaining to the increase in electricity tariffs has been scheduled for the 29th of August adding they are also working towards including the amended Budget in the agenda on the 30th and 31st of August and 01st and 02nd of September.
Minister Premajayantha said discussions are underway to provide relief to those who require concessions through the amended Budget.
