The opposition charges that the government is not publicising the statistics regarding the number of COVID-19 patients identified daily, in an accurate manner.

Speaking during a media briefing Parliamentarian Rajitha Senarathne said according to medical specialists the number of COVID-19 patients detected daily is three times more than the number reported.

The MP noted under the present situation the coronavirus pandemic is ahead, amidst the vaccination drive.

He added over three persons succumb to the virus every hour.

The MP claimed a critical situation will arise by September.

MP Senarathne said the government has failed to launch a successful programme to contain the COVID-19 pandemic, based on recommendations issued by the World Health Organization.

The MP noted the WHO has recommended that each country studies previous epidemics and steps taken to prevent them, adding however the present administration had failed to do so.

He said the former good governance government was able to mitigate six epidemics.

MP Senarathne claimed the former government was able to contain dengue like no other country, within four months, adding the WHO expressed their gratitude to the then administration.

Meanwhile, MP Senarathne also directed his attention towards two main supplies that are necessary to minimise the prevailing risk in the country.

He stressed plans must be made to provide beds and oxygen to persons.

MP Senarathne said temporary facilities must be provided promptly, where there is a lack of beds, adding that such tasks can be fulfilled by the Army and Police.

He claimed such facilities can be constructed within two-three weeks.

The MP further said oxygen suppliers had stated that only 30% of their capacity is being used at present, adding therefore there is no oxygen shortage.

He noted however there is an issue regarding transporting the oxygen to patients, which is a weakness in the system.

Parliamentarian Rajitha Senarathne added a large number of lives can be saved if beds and oxygen is provided.
