The Department of Meteorology predicts the low-pressure area over the Southwest Bay of Bengal has intensified in to a depression and is located 420k.m to the northeast of Trincomalee.
The Department said it is very likely to cross Sri Lanka on the 24th and 25th of December.
Under its influence, rainy and windy conditions are likely to increase over most parts of the island during the weekend.
Showers are accordingly expected at times in the Northern, Eastern, Uva and North-Central provinces.
Strong gusty winds of about 40-50kmph can be expected at times over the Northern, Eastern, Western, Sabaragamuwa and Uva provinces.
