Railway transportation has been hampered owing to the strike action launched by Station Masters.

They withdrew from services at midnight over several demands including demands for sanitary facilities.

Chairman of the Railway Station Masters Association Sumedha Somaratne speaking to NewsRadio said the one-day token strike has been a success.

He said while they are aware of the coronavirus situation in the country, they do not intend on inconveniencing the public.

Somaratne said the health sector is able to provide all facilities including protective equipment, but have failed to do so thus far.

He noted that two employees tested positive for the coronavirus at the Ambalangoda Railway Station while positive cases were identified at the Mahara Railway Station as well, adding that steps must be taken to close the stations as commuters are at risk.

However, he charged that officials of the Railway Department are not attempting to address the risk at hand and are instead paving the way to increase the spread of the virus.

Somaratne stated the Railway Control room has been provided all safety equipment and PPE kits while Station Masters who mingle with the public have not been provided any gear.
