Former Chairman of the Committee on Public Enterprise MP Charitha Herath says as the Public Utilities Commission of Sri Lanka is against an increase in electricity tariffs, the PUCSL can pursue legal action.

MP Herath said disregarding the views of the PUCSL is a violation of the law.

He added as a mechanism is in place to revise electricity tariffs, the process must be done according to the law.

The MP charged that the public is already battered by the increase in tariffs enforced in August last year adding that this is a ploy to move towards privatisation.

Prof. Herath added that the proposal presented to the Cabinet of Minister to approve an electricity tariff hike will likely be approved next week and urged the Ministers to study the Cabinet Paper thoroughly.
