Parliamentarian Mahinda Amaraweera says public will starve to death on the streets in a few months if prevailing issues are not resolved promptly.

Speaking in Parliament today, MP Amaraweera said the sudden ban on chemical fertilisers was the beginning of the current crisis.

The Parliamentarian claimed he issued a warning during the meeting of the Cabinet of Ministers as a former Minister of Agriculture that the ban on chemical fertilisers will be unsuccessful leading to a food crisis adding however all warnings were ignored.

He said the chemical fertiliser ban was the beginning of massive public protests. The MP said a programme to protect the public from starvation must be formulated.

Joining the debate, MP Udaya Gammanpila also said the present administration’s downfall commenced when the ban on chemical fertilisers was announced in April 2021.

MP Gammanpila claimed only four Cabinet Ministers voiced their opposition to the decision.

He said during the hour-long discussion only himself, Minister Ramesh Pathirana and former Ministers Bandula Gunawardana and Vasudeva Nanayakkara expressed opposition.

The MP claimed a Minister said through implementing the decision, the Head of State will go down in history while a majority of the Cabinet remained silent.
