Samagi Jana Balawegaya Parliamentarian Kins Nelson says the current drug shortage has severely burdened the public.
Speaking in Parliament yesterday, MP Nelson said the drug shortage is now similar to the prevalent food crisis adding medicine prices vary throughout the day.
The Parliamentarian said the government has been asked not to speak of the medicine mafia.
He said certain drugs cannot be purchased while the thyroxine drug has been unavailable during the past week.
The MP said there is a shortage of 52 types of drugs including 32 drugs, that are used to treat illnesses such as cancer and diabetes.
MP Nelson said the price of a nutritious meal has decreased while prices of medicines have increased drastically.
The Parliamentarian stressed on the importance of providing special and high demand medicines to the market at a very low price.
