Deputy Speaker of Parliament Ajith Rajapakse says at a time when many challenges have to be faced than ever before in history, employees of one of the highest institutions of the country, Parliament, must undertake responsibilities to fulfil the expectations of the people.
The Deputy Speaker expressed his views during an oath/affirmation of the event held in Parliament to mark the new year at the Parliamentary complex.
The Deputy Speaker said after overcoming the challenge of COVID-19, the nation had to face an economic crisis and stated that public servants have a responsibility to work towards overcoming existing difficulties.
The Deputy Speaker added that government employees have a great responsibility towards the people in a challenging environment given the background where a large number of public servants retired at the same time.
After hoisting of the National Flag at the main steps of the Parliament building, the Parliament oath/affirmation of the public service was held.
A two-minute silence was observed afterwards to mark the lives of war heroes.
Addressing the staff, Chief of Staff and Deputy Secretary General of Parliament Kushani Rohanadeera said, to save the country from existing difficulties, we must work with maximum efficiency even in a challenging environment.
The Deputy Secretary General said many new committees will be established in Parliament and accordingly, in a background where recruitments and financial allocations are limited, we should work as one family with more commitment.
The Deputy Secretary General also expressed her gratitude for the contribution of the parliament staff towards the smooth running of parliamentary affairs during the COVID challenge.
