Election monitoring body the Centre for Monitoring Election Violence charges that public representatives have failed to enforce proposals tabled by the Labour Commissioner General pertaining to eradicating child labourers in Sri Lanka.
Speaking to NewsRadio, National Coordinator Manjula Gajanayake said if a census is conducted of residences in Colombo, a significant number of underage domestic workers can be identified.
Gajanayake stated Parliament must pay attention to this matter of concern, and charged that the issue has been purposely avoided.
He noted that the Labour Commissioner General introduced a national programme to eradicate child labour in Sri Lanka while legislators and public representatives have failed to direct any attention to enforcing the proposals.
He charged that public representatives have failed to fulfil their duties.
