Geologists say the probability of a large earthquake in Sri Lanka, based on the country’s geographical location, is very minimal.

A programme was conducted today by the Geological Survey and Mines Bureau pertaining to the risk of earthquakes in Sri Lanka.

Clarifications were made at the meeting over the possibility of a large earthquake in future, due to periodical earthquakes that were reported from the central hills.

All experts who expressed their views stressed that Sri Lanka is located near the centre of the Indo-Australian plate, and although small earthquakes could occur, the likelihood of a large earthquake is very minimal.

Therefore, they claimed that an unnecessary fear need not be created.
