Parliamentarian Patali Champika Ranawaka says the government should prioritise resuming academic activities of students of Ordinary and Advanced Level classes when reaching a decision on reopening schools that are closed due to the coronavirus.
Taking to social media, MP Ranawaka said nearly 300,000 students who are due to sit for the GCE Advanced Level Examination this year can be inoculated in one day.
He said classes should not resume for Grade 5 students first.
MP Ranawaka said A/Level students should be administered the Pfizer vaccine.
He said blaming teachers and principals who are staging a strike based on reasonable demands, is not the solution.
The MP said solutions must be provided to the issues of teachers and principals and resume schools.
He said vaccinations of students is imperative and therefore noted that every measure should be taken to conduct O/Level and A/Level exams as well examinations at universities.
He said the government can take steps to procure Pfizer vaccine doses that are in surplus in some Western countries.
Parliamentarian Ranawaka said the government must have a systematic approach to the vaccination of children that will help expedite the move to reopen schools.
