Traders say the prices of broiler chicken and eggs will increase further.
Speaking during a media briefing in Colombo today, President of the All Island Poultry Association Ajith Gunasekera said since they cannot meet the current demand, the price of an egg will increase to Rs. 70 while a kilogram of chicken could increase to around Rs.1,600 to Rs.1,700.
Ajith Gunasekera said producers are facing difficulties, due to the dollar shortage and the current economic crisis.
He said they require around USD 40 million monthly to import animal feed.
Gunasekera said if they receive locally produced corn stocks, then the production cost will reduce considerably.
Ajith Gunasekera noted that there is a huge demand for chicken and eggs at present and therefore if the demand is not met, then the prices will increase.
