Tamil National Alliance Parliamentarian MA Sumanthiran says the President consented to take prompt measures to release land in the North and release former LTTE cadres.

The President and representatives of the TNA engaged in a round of talks yesterday (21).

President Ranil Wickremesinghe called an all-party meeting on the 14th of this month with the aim of reaching a common consensus to seek solutions to the national issue through national reconciliation.

Subsequently, another round of discussions between the President and the TNA took place at the Presidential Secretariat yesterday to further discuss the way forward.

MP Sumanthiran commenting on the meeting said the talks were attended by the President, the Prime Minister, the Ministers of Justice and Foreign Affairs, the Attorney General, R Sampanthan, Minister Douglas Devananda and himself.

The MP said the release of political prisoners was discussed while five individuals who can be released immediately were identified.

He said the Attorney General will issue directives on what measures should be taken in this regard, adding that they were informed that discussions were held with the Army on the release of land while recommendations will be handed over to the National Security Council on the 3rd of January.

MP Sumanthiran said a decision was reached that discussions should be held over other land areas as well.

Accordingly, the group will convene once again on the 5th of January and discuss future work.
