COLOMBO (NewsRadio); President Ranil Wickremesinghe has decided to confer the title Sri Lankabhimanya, Sri Lanka’s highest national award on Desabandu Karu Jayasuriya.
The 82-year-old former Speaker of House and the current Chairman National Movement for Social Justice will become only the eighth recipient of the prestigious award.
Former President Ranasinghe Premadasa in 1986 became the first recipient of the award while WD Amaradeva received the award in 2017.
Founder of the Sarvodaya Shramadana Movement AT Ariyaratne who was conferred the title of Sri Lankabhimanya in 2007 and is the only living recipient of the award.
President Ranil Wickremesinghe will personally confer the title on Karu Jayasuriya at a Ceremony of Investiture to be held at the Presidential Secretariat on the 3rd of February.
The award is conferred on individuals who have rendered exceptionally outstanding and most distinguished service to Sri Lanka.
Former Speaker Karu Jayasuriya did not contest the last General Election and has been leading the National Movement for Social Justice after leaving public office.
